About this project
What is it?
The New Migration is a web project with the aim of reporting, analyzing and aggregating data on immigration in a thought-provoking and interactive form.
Why immigration?
Immigration is a very personal subject. Both of my parents emigrated from Mexico in 70s and were undocumented. They are now legal permanent residents. Their stories about crossing the border and the hardships they faced have always stuck with me and made me realize how fortunate I was to have been born in the United States.
Can you stay objective then?
I have my personal thoughts and feelings on the issue, obviously. However, the purpose of this site is not to provide just one side of the story. I believe a person always learns more when they have both sides of the story. My objective is simply to present facts, opinions from other sources and allow you to make a decision about this critical issue. Currently, I only have one video on pro-immigrant group, but I fully intend on making a video about those opposed to immigration.
How did you construct this site?
Excellent question. I used a lot of Adobe programs, namely Flash, Premiere and Dreamweaver to put this site together. I have a Panasonic DV camera that I film with. It's nothing special, but it gets the job done. None of this is meant as a plug, though. Anyway, I would recommend that if you do not have the latest Flash player to download it because otherwise you will miss a lot of great stuff.
How do we contact you if we have question or comments?
That's an easy one. You can email me at mairalgarcia@gmail.com. If you happen to be on Twitter, my handle is @mairalg. I generally Twitter about politics, political communication and new media research and random thoughts about being a graduate student. I love random @ replies and direct messages!
